October upgrades for the garden

Another parcel for Matt.

IMG_5061
After loads of research, we settled for a’tondo-broyeur’. Who needs horses or sheep when you have one of those.
However, they forgot the key and Matt is pretty impatient. I did phone them to request it but he couldn’t wait to he made one.

And took it for a spin.
IMG_5102
I actually remember his first outing. I remember seeing him fighting with a few bushes. 😉
Next step: Preparing 2 camping areas and destroying the old ant hills.

Last of the clearing stage. Hourray!

We finished clearing the upstairs, on top of the rooms and the barn.
This truly felt like such an achievement.
IMG_5025
On top of the room. All cleared and cleaned…ready for the carpenters. And more cleaning afterwards….

How it was when we arrived in August, some interesting things left behind by the old owners of the property.
IMG_5027
We had to take all these tiles downstairs but via the dodgy planks of wood and the stairs…That was going to take hours so:

Nice one Matt!

IMG_5028

Matt got a big Quad to play with and I got this! Haha but fear not I am over the moon with it.
Hoovered more than 20 spiders and webs on its first day. Proper party central in that hoover bag.
IMG_2347
IMG_2311
And this is why I started wearing a cap. Cobwebs are dreadful enough but when they’re over your head. Arrrgggg…
IMG_2312
IMG_2308
Another glamorous job, scraping the floor.
Actually when I think of it: October was pretty much scraping or digging for me.
IMG_2305
While I was clearing these areas, Matt was building the scaffolding – ready for us to clean the wood and treat it.
He did pretty well as he absolutely hates heights.
IMG_2303
IMG_2313

I found Roland near the scaffolding one morning. Not too sure how it got there!?!? RIP.

Wood, wood beautiful wood

We had some wood from old the old planks that Matt had cut but we decided to also clear the wood from the pig shed. Even though it is pretty old, coupled with some new wood it should make a nice fire.

Let’s start storing some wood in one of the famous ‘Widmore fruit farm/Bridger family’ fruit boxes.
IMG_5062
Then we ordered some seasoned firewood from a local guy and it was delivered right to our doorstep, with the help of ‘Buzz’ the dog.

A little more wood storing to do…with the kids’ help.

Ready for winter….or maybe just a little bit more??
Another delivery of wood to be dried and seasoned ready for next year.
IMG_2597
And it’s never too early to learn how to cut wood to make kindling.

IMG_5120

A while back we noticed this little dead guy (un loir dormant) on our neighbours wall, and I guess because we’ve been  seeing him on a regular basis we named him ‘Roland’…….Well, Roland has gone missing!

Small is always better for new gardeners

I wanted to prepare a little vegetable patch for next year so with Eric & Coco’s help we started DIGGING some more.
IMG_2120
IMG_2231
The weather started to turn a little more wintery so it was time to start.
IMG_2366
Whilst digging we found a few old nests and an old underground? wasps nest.

IMG_2427
IMG_2424
We decided to use this old door for the second level. Eric’s brilliant idea to have 2 levels, mine was to use that door for it. 😉
IMG_2232
Rhys can now play basket ball there now so pretty cool.

 M&M! lol
We fed the birds from time to time in this coconut’s shell attached to a stick but we needed something better for winter…

IMG_2224
We looked around and found all we needed.

We are surrounded by birds and really enjoy watching them from the bungalow. The bravest are the blue tits. We have also spotted robins, wrens, chaffinchs, goldfinchs and lots of sparrows.

I also planted some bulbs in the water trough and in the ‘lavoir’ and we’ve tried some ivy in the toilets.

I have also replaced the cap I was wearing (I started wearing one when I was clearing the barn) with Rhys’ old scoobydoo hat. (trend setter-me!)
And yes I did wear it to bed one night when the temperature dropped. We don’t heat the bungalow during the night and to be fair even Charlie was cold that night. (see pic below). 😉

We have been doing A LOT of digging

We wanted to tackle the back of the house before winter really sets in and that involved digging it.
IMG_4958

IMG_2241

view from the ‘rat’s castle’

A lot of it is clay so pretty hardcore to dig.
IMG_2234
IMG_2239
This also meant A LOT of trips to the ‘rat’s castle’ for Matt.
IMG_2235

IMG_2242
Mont in the Mist.
We started digging and as always with tedious tasks, Matt gets bored very easily, so he decided to spice things up and build some stairs!

Transported ‘the big one’ egyptian style.

IMG_2250
IMG_2258
That ‘kind of’ wasn’t enough, so he looked around for other stones and found an old water trough.

Moles M25 underneath the water trough.
IMG_2261
Whilst I made mud balls and found treasures….Like an old cow’s horn.
(also found some teeth but forgot to take a photo! lol)
IMG_2266
Oh and also pulled some Monster roots.
IMG_4974
IMG_2267
We were pretty happy with what we had achieved.
We left it for a couple of weeks and then we started digging again with one little difference.
Out with the old…in with the new.

Added a few stones to the stairs.

And this is what we started with.

Bad discovery

We knew that some of the wood needed treating against woodworms but we didn’t expect it in that area.
Something else we’ll have to do sooner rather than later.
IMG_4866 IMG_4878

Once we cleared all the straw, we started clearing the cobwebs in one part of the Barn and we found some of the wood from the roof is infested with insects. Fun job to come!
